Kahal Am is a compelling option for modern Jewish
identity in the San Diego Area.
Humanistic Jews
understand Judaism as the human-centered
history, culture, civilization, ethical values, and shared
experiences of the Jewish people. We believe that
individuals shape their own lives independent of a
supernatural authority.
(philosophy)
You may
recognize that our humanistic views of Jewish culture,
traditions, and observances correspond with the way in which
you would like to cherish your Judaism. Our warm, caring
community welcomes anyone who identifies with Judaism,
including intercultural families.
(about us)
We hope our
website will give you an understanding of Humanistic Judaism
and we encourage you to visit our congregation. Please feel
free to
contact us for more information.

Sunday Discussion
(The Woman's Club of Carlsbad) |
On Sunday, June 28 at
10:30 a.m., Kahal Am is proud to present the ACLU San Diego
President Debbie Fritsch to discuss one of the most contentious
issues facing our democracy. Can Americans have true security
without justice at Guantanamo? Should the 270 prisoners being held
at this U.S. prison in Cuba have the right to a fair trial? Anthony
Romero, ACLU Executive Director, said, “The Guantanamo Military
Commissions were set up to convict detainees on the basis of secret
evidence, hearsay, and confessions derived from torture. Its
procedures raise serious questions about the government’s commitment
to constitutional principles that are the bedrock of American
liberty, including the right to a fair trial…” Are the military
commissions established by former President Bush consistent with our
American values? How should President Obama proceed if he really
wants to close down the prison at Guantanamo?
Plan to attend this Sunday Discussion at the Women’s Club of
Carlsbad and bring guests. Admission is free and light refreshments
will be provided following the presentation. |

Shabbat
(The Woman's Club of Carlsbad) |
|
Jewish women have really come into
their own over the past fifty years, and nowhere is this better seen
than in the area of comedy. They have pushed the limits of humor
beyond commentary on stereotypical female roles to cover the gamut
of topical subjects.
The July
Shabbat program will highlight the contributions of such modern
models of female Jewish humor as Judy Holliday, Joan Rivers, Gilda
Ratner, Roseanne Barr, and Bette Midler. Join Madrikha Beverly and
Cantor Deborah as they explore this delightful topic. Bring your own
jokes to share during the discussion. An oneg refreshment will
follow. |

HJ School Meeting
(Carmel Del Mar Park) |
|
The Humanistic
Jewish School has a wonderful education program for families to
share a learning connection to Jewish heritage. Our unique approach
teaches children to appreciate the human effort of the history and
culture of the Jewish civilization. Parents attend breakouts and
experience connection with other independent-minded adults. For a
powerful alternative, rich in Jewish expression and ethical values,
consider joining the Humanistic Jewish School. There will be an
informational meeting for planning the new school year on Saturday,
July 25, at 10:00 am at Carmel Grove Park. The park is at 12345
Carmel Park Drive, San Diego, 92130 (off Carmel Grove Rd. - Carmel
Creek exit off the 56 freeway). Contact Beverly Zarnow for
information at
madrikha@kahalam.org
or 858-549-3088. |
